The history of road cycling races
Road cycling was on the list of sports at the very first modern-era multi-sport event, which took place in Athens in 1896. The course of the race was along the original marathon route from Athens to Marathon and back to Athens, with a thrilling finish at the Phaliron Velodrome. While the original, individual races were exclusively for men, the individual road race for women competitors appeared in the summer of 1984; the next addition to the road race events was the inclusion of individual time trials for both men and women in 1996. Since then, the sport has gone from strength to strength, with highly talented athletes striving to make their mark on the medals board in their event category. The medals table has, traditionally, been dominated by contestants from Europe, with the current title holder for the men’s individual road race (Greg Van Avermaet) coming from Belgium, and the reigning champion for the women’s race (Marianne Vos) coming from The Netherlands.
