Based on a true story
The Sound of Music is considered to be among the top of the all-time classics when it comes to musicals. Since its initial production, it has been well loved and well received by audiences for generations to come. The musical was inspired by the film The Trapp Family, which is about the story of Maria von Trapp entitled, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The memoir tells the story of an Austrian family, the Trapps, and their adventures coming from Austria to living in America after escaping Nazi – invaded Europe. Through be music of Richard Rogers and the lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II, The Sound of Music hit the Broadway in 1959, capturing and fictionalising the story of the Trapp family. The Sound of Music was an instant hit and bagged several awards where it won five Tony Awards out of nine nominations in 1960. With wide public interest, a film of the same title was released in 1965. The film was directed by Robert Wise, who also directed the film adaptation of another popular musical, The West Side Story. In 1991, another adaptation of the Trap family’s story was released. Entitled Trapp Family Story, the 40-episode anime adaptation first aired in Japan in Nihongo, which eventually got localised dubs when it aired in other countries soon after.
