All about The Brand New Heavies
Formed in 1985 by guitarist Simon Bartholomew, drummer and keyboardist Jan Kincaid and keyboardist and bassist Andrew Levy, the instrumental trio initially wanted to make music similar to that of Meters and James Brown. Indeed, while those years saw the boom of hip-hop, The Brand New Heavies focused more on soul music, introducing elements of the 1970s funk grooves.
Inadvertently, The Brand New Heavies became the pioneers of acid jazz, particularly in the London scene. With vocalist Jay Ella Ruth joining the band, the British funk royalty released their very first single "Got to Give". Its success led to The Brand New Heavies signing a deal with the indie label Acid Jazz and to the release of their self-titled LP The Brand New Heavies (1990). The band expanded and multiple talented vocalists such as N'dea Davenport and Siedah Garrett have contributed to their music, with Sulene Fleming now proudly taking the role of vocalist. Reaching popularity comparable to that of Soul II Soul, The Brand New Heavies became an international success and amassed a cult-like following. Over three decades later, the jazz group keeps wowing audiences all over the world. Want to see what the fuss is all about?
