Sting, whose real name is Gordan Matthew Thomas Sumner, began his humble beginnings as the main songwriter, lead singer and bassist for that classic eighties rock band, The Police! During his tenure with the band, he has amassed a number of awards and nominations, and found himself ranking considerably well in a number of top one hundred lists! In fact, if we wanted to be precise about his awards he currently holds sixteen Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards (one for Outstanding Contribution), a Golden Globe, an Emmy Award and a number of Oscar nominations! No wonder he stands as such a legendary figure!
Yes, there’s no doubt that music is only a part of what makes Sting such a talented artist! His contribution not only lies in his songs but he has acted, dabbled in philanthropy and even activism! While his filmography can include a number of eighties titles such as Quadrophenia, Dune, The Bride, Julia and Julia, his last role as an actor was in the Guy Ritchie classic Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. On the activist front, He has participated in Amnesty International’s gala “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball”, and managed to round up a host of top musicians (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Phill Collins, Bob Geldof Donovan) to perform alongside him with the group being dubbed The Secret Police! And this was just the beginning! So if you want to see one humanities finest examples, then look no further than Sting himself! Buy your Sting tickets now!
Ever surprising, Sting has most recently made news with the singer/songwriter dipping his toes in the Broadway scene, composing and writing the lyrics to his new musical The last Ship. Set in his hometown in the northeast of England, the musical focuses on the closing of a shipyard and the problems the community now faces. While his father was a milkman, Sting’s grandfather and great grandfather built ships and it’s their story Sting has decided to tell.
With the album Soul Cages released in nineteen ninety, Sting had already explored the themes about the death of his father and the abandoned shipyard he grew up next to. As such, the musical furthers his work through Soul Cages, with Sting delving deeper into the metaphor surrounding the album. Pitching the idea to a Broadway producer five years ago, Sting described The Last Ship as ”about a grand gesture. These men who used to build ships decided they would build one last ship as a gesture and they’d build it for themselves and sail off into the sunset.”
