Slovenia ice hockey history
This section should discuss history, milestones, live performance and any other relevant and interesting information for fans and ticket buyers.
Ice hockey arrived in the region of Slovenia in the late 1920's with players from the area playing for Yugoslavia for most of the 20th century.
Slovenia participated in world ice hockey as a member of Yugoslavia and competed in a number of international tournaments from 1939. The Yugoslavia teams which participated in several World Championships and Winter Olympics contained many Slovenian players and in 1991 the national team was almost entirely filled with Slovenian players.
With this solid foundation, the emergence of Slovenia as a newly independent nation in 1991 presented these ice hockey players with a new challenge and in 1992 Slovenia played its first ice hockey match against Austria. Over the course of the decade, the players of Slovenia fought to consolidate their position in world ice hockey and hovered just outside the top ten of the IIHF rankings.
