About the DJ
Born Matthias Paul in 1971, van Dyk grew up in East Berlin. As a boy, the world beyond the Berlin Wall was inaccessible to him, but he was able to stealthily listen to the radio (RIAS (Radio in the American Sector) and Sender Freies Berlin (Radio Free Berlin)) and smuggled mixtapes from time to time. He credits these secret moments with the beginning of his love for music. He was able to finagle a turntable setup – and so began his journey to becoming a global DJ. When the Berlin Wall came down, van Dyk lived in Hamburg briefly before returning to Berlin in 1990. The following year, he DJed in the legendary Tresor underground nightclub – his first official gig. He started getting gigs around the city, including at the Turbine club. He collaborated with several other DJs during this time, including Cosmic Baby; the two were known as "Visions of Shiva", and they released two singles together. After taking different creative directions, Van Dyk released his debut LP, "45 RPM", in 1994. Four years later, "Seven Ways" was released. This second album really put van Dyk on the map in the world of trance, with "DJ Magazine" readers rating it No. 1. In 1998, van Dyk became a stakeholder for Vandit Records, and in 2007 he released his fifth studio album, "In Between". It reached No. 2 on the Billboard's Top Electronic Albums and No. 1 on the Top Heatseekers. Tickets to Paul van Dyk’s world tour performances consistently sold out. Two years later, van Dyk returned to the Berlin Wall to perform at the 20th Anniversary Memorial. He then put on the "We Are One Festival", named after the song he and Johnny McDaid had recorded for the 20th anniversary celebrations. By that time, he was a worldwide phenomenon.
