Manchester City's rise to prominence
Formed in the late nineteenth century, Manchester City has had its fair share of highs and lows, and despite success in both, the '60s and '70s, the following two decades proved particularly tough periods, with the team facing relegation all the way to the 3rd division! The renowned team eventually established itself once more as a Premier League regular back in 2002, with the following 7 years proving to be a period of stability! Of course, good things can't last forever, and 2007 saw the ownership of Manchester City fall to former Thailand president Thaksin Shinawatra, whose allegations of corruption in Thailand against him lead to his assets being frozen! Throwing Manchester City finances into turmoil, Shinawatra sold the club and a last-minute takeover deal was struck, with the, then unknown, Abu Dhabi United Group! While many were left unsure of who exactly was the head of the group, it soon became apparent that Manchester City had struck gold! Finding out that the team's owner was none other than Sheikh Mansour, one of the wealthiest men in the world, with a family fortune estimated at an unfathomable $1 trillion US dollars! Needless to say, Manchester City is now one of the wealthiest football teams in the world, rivalling Man Utd.
Can Manager Pep Guardiola Lead Manchester City To Another Victory?
Josep “pep” Guardiola Sala is a highly acclaimed Spanish professional football manger and former defensive midfielder, who took over as commander in chief of Manchester City in 2016, after a three-year winning tenure for Bayern Munich. In his second year at the helm, Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to victory taking out the 2017/18 premiere league title. Guardiola then went on to take the football world by surprise when he took out the 2018/19 title to make it two consecutive wins in a row. The question on everyone’s lips is now? Can he make it a hat trick, and lead the team to victory for a win in the 2019/20 season? Only time will tell, but it will surely make for an interesting match.
In preparation for the season ahead, Guardiola made two major acquisitions during the summer transfer window in defender João Cancelo from Juventus for £27.4m plus Danilo and midfielder Rodri from Atlético Madrid for a fee of £62.8M, a club record.
