Lollapalooza – Chicago’s iconic rock festival
Conceived by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, Lollapalooza has been an iconic fixture on the US festival circuit since the early 1990s. Take a look at the range of Lollapalooza tickets currently on offer on StubHub.
A former travelling show
Lollapalooza originated in 1991 as a farewell tour for alt-rock legends Jane’s Addiction but proved to be so popular that it soon took on a life of its own. The Butthole Surfers, Violent Femmes, Ice-T and Body Count, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Nine Inch Nails all performed at the inaugural event which, unlike most festivals, toured various American cities. And over the next few years a whole host of grunge artists signed up to perform across the country on the tour, including Hole, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and The Smashing Pumpkins. After taking a six-year break from the circuit, Lollapalooza returned in 2003 with a 30-city tour before settling at its home of Chicago’s Grant Park two years later, where it once again established itself as one of America’s premier music festivals. The event has also been launched across the world, including in Chile in 2011, Brazil in 2012, Argentina in 2014, Germany in 2015, France in 2017 and Sweden in 2019. You can both buy and sell single and multi-day Lollapalooza tickets on StubHub now.
200 acts from a wide range of genres
The Strokes, Childish Gambino, Twenty One Pilots and Ariana Grande were all chosen as Main Stage headliners for the Chicago leg of Lollapalooza 2019, with The Chainsmokers, Tame Impala, J Balvin and Flume topping the bill on the Bud Light Stage. The festival’s seven other stages also showed how much more eclectic the festival has become since its alt-rock beginnings, with acts including contemporary Christian singer Lauren Daigle, rapper Lil Baby, soul singer Emily King, chillout trio Men I Trust, synth-pop starlet Sigrid, Latin sensation Rosalia, electronic duo CamelPhat, and the cast of Broadway musical "Hamilton". Nearly 200 acts and 100,000 festivalgoers descended upon Grant Park for the four-day event which also boasted a roller skating rink, VIP area, two-storey gaming centre, several merchandise stalls and a wide range of local restaurants including Original Rainbow Cone, Harold’s Chicken and Billy Goat Tavern.
