The rise of a girl band
Since the mid-90s, Britpop has been dominating the airwaves on both the British and international scenes. Numerous British artists have set trends not only in music but also in pop culture. Among the most iconic contemporary Britpop artists is girl band Little Mix. Little Mix was formed in 2011 by Jade Thirlwall, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards as a product of the hit TV competition show, "The X-Factor". The girls originally joined "The X-Factor" as individuals, but then eventually collaborated to form the group Rhythmix. In the end they had to change their name to Little Mix since Rhythmix was also the name of a children’s music charity in Brighton. After winning the competition, Little Mix was signed into Simon Cowell’s label, Syco Music, in 2011.
A Britpop sensation
In 2012 the band released their first album, entitled "DNA". The album contained twelve songs, while the deluxe version had four additional tracks. The album’s first single, "Wings", topped the British, American and European charts. Its second single, "DNA", was also a chart-topper. Generally, the album received positive reviews from both fans and critics and was also huge commercial success. "DNA" was followed by their second album, "Salute", in 2013, which also received very positive reviews. By 2018 Little Mix had already released five albums, all of which were successful in both chart rankings and commercial sales. Their back-to-back successes cemented the group as one the most influential girl bands in history, along with the likes of the Spice Girls and Solid Harmonie, and fans flock to see their energetic live performances.
