A soul and rock legend and his roots
There are stars – and then there is Lenny Kravitz. In the music scene he is established as one of the most popular and influential rock and soul stars with more than 40 million records sold and numerous awards adorning his shelves. Kravitz was born in 1964 in New York and his background of an actress mother and TV producer father may have had some impact on him choosing the show business. Whatever led to his affiliation with music, he already used pots to drum on when he was the tender age of three, and at five he was certain he would become a musician one day. Seeing The Jackson Five in concert inspired him even more and he started playing the drums and guitar. The investment and support he received from his parents clearly paid off, as he launched into his internationally-successful music career in the 1980s. Struggling at first because labels deemed his music neither "white nor black enough", he decided to simply produce his first album himself. During the time of producing, however, major record labels like Warner Bros and Virgin started vying for his attention and he ultimately released his debut album "Let Love Rule" with Virgin Records in 1989. Even though his home turf received the album critically, the album was an instant success in Europe. Ever since then he’s been a household name in the music scene and won awards like the MTV Video Music Award, various Grammy awards and a Billboard Music Award.
