Naming the Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets was not the original name of this beloved Colorado team. When the franchise entered into the Association of American Basketball in 1967, they were originally known as the Denver Rockets. The Denver Rockets had early success on the court and within a few years, a solid fan base was established. In 1972, the franchise acquired a change of ownership and with entry into the NBA looming, a name change was inevitable. The name Rockets was already taken in the league by the NBA team San Diego Rockets, which led to Denver team officials renaming the club to the Denver Nuggets. Although the Nuggets have fallen short of championship success throughout the years, they made history after playing the highest ever scoring NBA game. In 1983, the Nuggets were up against the Detroit Pistons at McNichols Arena, with the match resulting in a combined score of 370 points. Although the Pistons won the game 186–184 in triple over-time, it still remains the highest scoring game in NBA history. New era: Denver Nuggets
While the Denver Nuggets success is yet to prosper, they are on journey to shift and evolve into a new era of basketball. In 2018, they unveiled a new brand identity including a new colour palette, five modern logos and three updated uniforms. Acknowledging the team’s past was an important factor when revamping these uniforms, however looking forward was also critical. Denver is often referred to as the Mile High City and for this reason, it was important for the Nuggets to include this on their new jersey. The updated uniforms also featured their first ever jersey patch from Western Union. A leading global company, Western Union has their headquarters in Denver and like the Nuggets, they are Colorado based with a big international presence. The partnership with Western Union was a bold step forward and shows affirmation of the significance the Nuggets and NBA have in Colorado. To watch the Denver Nuggets play at home in the Pepsi Center or away during the NBA Regular Season, tickets are available to buy or sell on StubHub now for a game that won’t disappoint!
