Dallas Mavericks: the third major basketball team in the Lone Star State
Founded in 1980 as an expansion team, the Dallas Mavericks are one of the younger teams in the National Basketball Association. Contrary to initial doubts that adding a third franchise in Texas to the existing San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets would not be profitable, the Mavericks have established themselves as a top-class basketball team. Today, the team is competing in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. With over 600 consecutive sold-out home games, they have had one of the longest running sell-out streaks of all North American major sports leagues. Power basketball in Big D
The Dallas Mavericks were named after the popular TV series with the same name by holding a fan naming contest. Fun fact is that the actor James Garner, who played Maverick in the series, was part of the owner group. The city proved to be a great choice to host a professional basketball team, bringing the sport to their population of over 1 million and as the following years showed, many of them big basketball fans. The team did not disappoint either and after initial struggles in the freshmen years went on to qualify regularly for the NBA playoffs. Over the years, they also won division titles and conference trophies. The most successful years kicked-off with the 2000-01 season when the offensive triangle of Michael Finley, Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash took the team into the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. It turned out to be the signal for a decade of successful power basketball, which led in 2011 to their first ever NBA championship crown, beating archrivals Miami Heat 4:2 in the finals. Other notable players were NBA Hall of Fame member Jason Kidd as well as Dennis Rodman, who stayed only one season with the Mavericks. Buy Dallas Mavericks tickets now at StubHub.
Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center
Coinciding with the up-ticking performance of the team was their move to the brand-new American Airlines Center in 2001. The venue is a state-of-the art multipurpose hall with a capacity of over 19,000 seats that houses a large variety of events, in addition to the home games of the Dallas Mavericks as well as NHL member Dallas Stars. The atmosphere in the arena is at the most vibrant during games against archrivals such as Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. Get your Dallas Mavericks tickets right here at StubHub.
