The teams for 2019 in Brazil
The initial plan for the 2019 South American tournament was for sixteen teams to take part, with six of the teams being invited from outside of the region of South America. However, in May 2018 the South American football federation announced that, like previous editions since 1993, there would be a total of twelve teams competing in the tournament. The two invited teams are Qatar, who will host the Football World Cup in 2022, and Japan. These two teams were chosen because of the close links between South American and Asian football. Undoubtedly nations like the USA and Mexico were disappointed not to be chosen, but thanks to the reduced tournament format, there can only be twelve.
