Buffalo Sabres: Ice Hockey in upstate New York
Professional ice hockey has a long tradition in Buffalo with the first team, the Buffalo Bisons, competing at the top level as far back as the year 1928. The unfortunate demise of the team came in 1936 when their arena collapsed. Just four years later, the Buffalo Bisons were reactivated and played in the American Hockey League until 1970, becoming an essential part of the sport with five AHL championships. The same year, the newly formed Buffalo Sabres were accepted into the National Hockey League as an expansion team. Get your Buffalo Sabres tickets at StubHub to watch them live.
Major sport teams in the City of Light
Buffalo, NY earned the nickname "City of Light" for being one of the first cities to enjoy the benefits of broad electric lighting at the turn of the 19th century. They were again at the centre of attention in 1970, when three sports team entered major leagues simultaneously. Along with the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL were the Buffalo Bills in the NFL and the Buffalo Braves in the NBL. Buffalo went from a city with no major professional sporting teams to having three within a matter of one season. However, since the Sabres and Braves shared the same arena, it proved unsustainable in the long run and at the end the Sabres prevailed, while the Braves where moved to San Diego and later to Los Angeles. Today, they are competing in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, one of the two leagues of the National Hockey League. The team has been able to add many division and conference championship titles to their trophies list, while also winning the President’s Trophy. Although they’ve qualified for the championship finals, they never won the NHL trophy, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975 and to the Dallas Stars in 1999. Some of their greatest players were NHL Hall of Fame members Gilbert Perreault and Pat LaFontaine as well as the Czech international goalkeeper Dominik Hasek.
